Second In Command

As I sit here on my front porch writing this post, thunder rumbles in the distance.  Just the slightest breeze has picked up and the brass bell that hangs off the porch echos a gentle chime.  The breeze picks up – “ting, ting, tingling”.  A sudden coolness sweeps across the porch.  Change is in the air.  This week’s hot and humid temperatures are ending and rain is on its way.  It’s been dry this week – so rain will be welcomed! Oh, how I love a cloudy, rainy day.  And that is precisely how are week is predicted to end.  I find a kind of peace on these days – a break from the simmering sun, the sound of rain as it hits the window, the gentle sigh of the earth as it drinks in the moisture.  I held off on watering the garden this week – hoping that the rain might do my job for me.  It’s that time of year when I grow weary of garden chores – the watering, harvesting, preserving.  In a few short months, though, I’ll kick myself for ever saying that!  Although the garden adds much work to our life – I wouldn’t trade the bountiful harvest it affords us for the luxury of relaxation… not in a million years (or as long as I have the fortitude to keep gardening!)I have a plaque that hangs above my gardening togs that reads:It’s a good reminder!As for harvesting the garden… I always have a helper.  Unfortunately, he demands his pay in produce!Today, I thought you might like a peek into the chicken yard to officially meet our new Rooster #2.You’ve already met Goose – Rooster #1….He’s a handsome, energetic rooster who takes caring for his flock very seriously.  He’s a very sweet rooster.Rooster #2 arrived earlier this summer as a “surprise” addition to the 15 chicks that we ordered.  Needless to say, we did not order another rooster.  But, still, here he is…  Rooster #2…. second in command…Bruce.He’s very similar to Goose, but has a little more brown in his coloration.Hopefully, as he ages, they will continue to get along with each other and not see each other as competition.  So far so good.Have a good Labor Day weekend!We’ll check back in on Monday.
