Launched by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) has spent more than 30 years funding research and education projects that focus on “the agronomically safe and environmentally sound use of fertilizer in California.”
Now, agricultural workers across California have the chance to submit pre-proposals for FREP’s upcoming 2025 season. The program is specifically looking for projects that study crop nutrient management and irrigation improvement strategies. FREP expects to award as much as $1.7 million in total, with individual grant amounts of $75,000–$100,000 awarded annually for a maximum of three years.
Since 1990, FREP has helped fund more than 270 projects across the state, investing over $31 million along the way. The program encourages applicants to submit pre-proposals that include benefits for “socially disadvantaged farmers and farmworkers,” and all applications should use the template provided on the grant program’s website. The deadline for pre-proposals is Monday, December 16, 2024, and those who pass the first round of the application process will be invited to develop full proposals. Click here to learn more.
At FGS, we share FREP’s goal of improving soil health, fine-tuning fertilizer management, and maximizing irrigation efficiency. We even expanded our irrigation department in recent years, allowing us to design, create, and install customized irrigation systems for our clients in-house.
