California’s 350 Million Pound Avocado Harvest

California grows 95% of the avocados produced here in America, and this year’s growing season has been one for the books.
Back in January, early estimates for this year’s avocado crop hovered around 208 million pounds. If those estimates had come true, California would’ve seen the smallest avocado harvest since the late 2000s. Luckily, estimates changed mid-year, with the California Avocado Commission adjusting the seasonal crop expectation to 270 million pounds.
Now, with the season officially coming to a close, the crop is expected to be more than 350 million pounds! That’s the highest volume in nearly half a decade, with Hass avocados representing a majority of the crop. Growers in inland Ventura County are largely to thank for the uptick in production, with those farmers harvesting as many as 20,000+ pounds per acre this year. That’s a high statistic compared to the year’s average avocado yield in San Diego and Riverside counties, which hovered around 3,000 pounds per acre. Those high yields in Ventura County are a reminder that California avocado production has experienced a significant shift away from San Diego County — the original hub of the state’s avocado production — toward northern territories like Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, where a number of wet winters have helped support a strong, hearty crop.
Looking ahead to 2025, early expectations are pointing to a bumper avocado crop that would exceed this year’s 350 million pounds. Of course, the growing season will be subject to weather, natural events, and wintertime temperatures.
